How I fight back racism in Germany against Asian hate

Today I wanted to buy some groceries from the supermarket, but it was going to close soon, so I had to hurry. When I got to the entrance, there were about four teenagers standing in front of the supermarket. As I was walking in, one of them called out, “ching chanx chonx” at me. I got really angry and shouted back, “Fick dich.”Then he looked at me once and immediately looked away, like he suddenly didn’t dare to say another word.I know they were probably just bullying teenagers, but has it really

I moved to Germany and already want to leave

I moved to Germany last year and honestly, I already regret it. What makes it worse is that, on paper, my life here actually looks pretty good. I study at university, I have a job that is well paid for a Werkstudent position in my opinion, my rent in southern Germany is manageable. I'm from a neigboring country I already spoke German before moving here. I even lived in Austria before, so I thought adapting would be easy. I also have some German roots in my family, which honestly made me belie

Ebbelwei Express Frankfurt am Main

The Ebbelwei-Expreß is a special tourist line operated by the Frankfurt tramway system. The line was launched in 1977 to mark the impending retirement of the last two-axle trams and was originally intended to run for only a short time. However, thanks to its enormous success, this unique attraction has survived to this day. This popular tram owes its name to "Ebbelwei"—the apple wine produced in Hesse that is served on board the carriage.

non-eu lonely and multiple failure in germany

Hi, I’m 25f from southeast asian country. I’ve been living in Germany since I was 18. I moved here alone, no family. Moving abroad was my dream since I was 12 since my family was toxic and I researched a lot of way to go abroad and chose Germany since there are opportunities like Au Pair, FSJ, Ausbildung where we don’t need to have a lot of money to do it and also studying in university is “cheap” and part-time job can cover living cost. I came in 2019 did random ausbildung in a gastronomy

apartment search in Köln just got insanely weird

Bro the craziest thing happened and idk what to think anymore So me and my friend were looking for an apartment in Köln and posted on Facebook asking about it. The post didn’t have any pictures of us, just information about us, where we’re from, our ages etc. A man contacted us and said he knows a family that has multiple apartments and gave us the wife’s number. We spoke to her and she said she wants our pictures to get a “good impression” of us. It felt weird but we did it anyway. Fast forw

What places in Germany have the most beautiful atmosphere? (Eremitage Bayreuth)

I was at the Eremitage in Bayreuth on Sunday. The place honestly surprised me. There are long paths everywhere, buildings, statues and many small details between the trees and gardens. What I especially liked were the paths there. Many of them feel almost romantic and very harmonious. You just walk slowly through the area and constantly discover new perspectives and small corners. The atmosphere there was also incredibly calm and pleasant. What places in Germany have the most beautiful atm

Going to germany as a citzen, but not as a german.

Hello everyone. I’m in a somewhat specific situation and, honestly, I don’t know what to expect. To provide some context, I am the son of a German father and a Brazilian mother, and we live in Brazil. Last year, I received news that a German uncle of mine was diagnosed with cancer. Because of this, part of the family traveled to Germany to see him, but things have been going downhill. Some time passed, and a possibility arose that scared me a bit; I’ve just entered adulthood (I’m 19, turning 2

How to deal with microaggressions in daily life?

Hi everyone, I’m a student and I’ve been living in Germany for a while, and while I generally enjoy the lifestyle here, I’ve recently had a string of encounters that left me wondering if I’m being targeted by what some call "Hilfssheriffs" or if there’s a deeper microaggression at play. As an Asian person, I try my best to follow the social codes, but these three incidents in a short span have been quite draining: 1. I was on the BRB (regional train) with a friend. We were talking in a very l

People who used to live in Germany, what are the little things you miss about it?

I’ve been missing my time in Germany a lot lately like idk why, I was there for only a year in 2020, so it wasn’t like I have a huge attachment to the country but idk i miss it! 🥺 Maybe i just miss being 20 idk like for example, i miss the FEELING of waiting to know how much Pfand money i’m getting at Rewe because I know i’ll be able to get free blutwurst. i miss going to my German classes, people complimenting you on your German, going to government offices or calling people and sometimes lau

Frankfurt am Main: "Mainhattan" between nature, history, and skyscraper canyons

Gude! (Local Frankfurt greeting!) Frankfurt is often reduced to just its massive airport or its cold financial district. But these four pictures capture the city's true diversity pretty well—an exciting mix of river idyll, historical charm, and modern architecture. Here is a little tour of the shots: **1. Relaxed greetings from the banks of the Main** The first picture shows a classic view of the skyline on a bright, clear day. The secret highlight, however, is the local "guest of honor" in t

Getting close to a year of unemployment, 1000+ applications, an M.Sc., C1 German, 17 interviews… and still no job. Why is so brutal? HONESTLY whats going on in the german job market??

I moved to Germany in 2021 with so much optimism. I worked hard on integrating, improved my German, got to the C1 level, and actually did really well in a lot of my student jobs. Back then I felt capable, confident, and honestly excited for the future. Now I’m 7 months out of graduating with an Msc with 1000+ applications sent, a gap-free resume, language skills, even recognition certificates from universities, competitions one, experience across different industries within Germany, and I still

Being ‘visibly foreign’ in the country you grew up in is a strange feeling

Sometimes I wonder how much a name or appearance changes people’s first impression before they even know you. I was born and raised in Germany, so culturally this is the only home I really know. But at the same time, I’ve often had the feeling of being slightly “outside” socially because I don’t have a stereotypically German name and I visibly look foreign to many people, becouse well i'm brown skinned my parents are south asian. It’s a strange feeling because I don’t walk around thinking ever

I have passed B2 Test

Today I have received the result for B2 für den Beruf Test. I am beyond happy that I have passed it because the test was more difficult than the ones we solved in course, which is quite odd as I always heard that the exams are a bit easier than the course tests. Especially the listening part was so scary that I assumed I would fail that part. Hoping to aim for C1 some day.

Had a bit of a strange experience in U-Bahn

So I was traveling on U-Bahn on my way to class and a guy came up to the seat next to me and started asking people if they spoke German. There was a girl sitting beside me who just bolted out when the guy spoke to her. I found it weird but hey I’ve seen weirder things before. So he asked me do you speak German and newly starting B1 guy in me said absolutely. He then asked me to that he wanted to use instagram to which I said I don’t have it. He then insisted that he just needs to use google and
